Flowers Christmas

Clip-on Christmas flowers are the quickest way to give a tree a dominant colour. You clip them straight onto a branch — no wire, no hook — and move them as often as you like until the spacing looks right.

The poinsettia, the Christmas flower

The poinsettia has been associated with Christmas for generations. In its artificial form it keeps the star shape and the broad bracts, without the drawbacks of the living plant — no watering, no sensitivity to cold, no leaves dropping after three weeks. Our velvet poinsettias come in red, white, pink, blue and multicolour; the glittered versions in gold, copper, champagne and silver.

Roses, magnolias and butterflies

The Christmas rose is the other main family: in matt velvet, shimmering or glittered, from cherry red to dusty pink, gold, silver, copper and brown. Midnight blue magnolias bring a contemporary note, and silver or gold butterflies a lighter touch that works surprisingly well on a restrained tree.

Velvet or glitter?

Velvet absorbs light and adds depth: placed beside a glossy bauble, it creates the matt-and-shine contrast that gives a tree relief. Glitter does the opposite — it catches the light from the string and sparkles with every movement. Mix the two rather than choosing.

How to place them

Work in odd numbers — three, five, seven — and spread the flowers in a spiral around the tree rather than in horizontal rings. The largest low, near the trunk; the smallest towards the top. And set them slightly deeper than your baubles: that offset gives the foliage depth instead of a flat surface.

Beyond the tree

A clip-on flower also fastens to a wreath, sits in a table centrepiece, ties onto a gift or dresses a shop window all winter. Unlike cut flowers they do not fade, and they come out again every year. They work equally well on a real Nordmann and on an artificial tree.
