Real or artificial Christmas tree: which should you choose for 2026?

Categories : Our tips

Real or artificial Christmas tree: it's THE question thousands of families ask themselves every November. One fills your home with the scent of the forest, the other comes out of the box in minutes every year. One grows in Belgium, the other lasts more than ten years. At Sapins.be, we have been selling both since 2004, so we have no reason to push you towards one or the other. Here is our honest comparison to help you choose the Christmas tree that truly matches the way you celebrate.

⚖️ 1. Real or artificial Christmas tree: the comparison at a glance

🌲 2. The real Christmas tree: for the magic and the scent of Christmas

Nothing beats the smell of a real tree filling your living room. The Belgian real Christmas tree remains the favourite choice for anyone who associates Christmas with tradition. Every tree is unique, with its own branches and silhouette.

At Sapins.be, our real trees are carefully selected, cut at the end of November and delivered fresh to your door on the date of your choice, from 20 November. The Nordmann fir is our best-seller: its soft needles don't prickle and hold remarkably well. Find out everything about this variety in our article Nordmann Christmas tree: 7 things to know before you buy.

A real tree is right for you if:

  • Christmas isn't Christmas without the scent of a fir tree;
  • you like to change size or shape from one year to the next;
  • you have no space to store a tree for the rest of the year;
  • you prefer a local, 100% biodegradable product.

✨ 3. The artificial Christmas tree: for convenience and longevity

Forget the plastic trees of the past. Today's premium artificial Christmas trees, made from a PE/PVC blend, offer dense foliage and a strikingly realistic look. They are fire-retardant (NEN 71-2 standard), go up in minutes on their metal stand and even come in a pre-lit version with built-in LEDs, so you never have to untangle a string of lights again.

An artificial tree is right for you if:

  • you like to put your tree up early and keep it until Epiphany;
  • you want zero needles on the floor and zero watering;
  • you travel over the holidays or host lots of guests;
  • you're looking for a lasting investment you'll reuse for many years.

🌍 4. And which is more eco-friendly?

This is often the question that tips the balance. The answer is more nuanced than you might think:

  • A real tree grows for 8 to 10 years, absorbing CO₂ along the way. Grown in Belgium, it travels very little, and after the holidays your local council collects it to turn it into compost or wood chips.
  • An artificial tree takes more energy to manufacture. To be greener than a real tree, it has to be kept for a long time: a frequently quoted Canadian study (Ellipsos, 2009) puts the figure at around twenty years.

👉 In short: a real Belgian tree every year, or a quality artificial tree kept for many years, are both responsible choices. The worst option is a cheap artificial tree thrown away after two seasons.

❓ Real or artificial Christmas tree: your frequently asked questions

Does a real Christmas tree shed a lot of needles?

Far less than you'd think, especially a Nordmann fir. Place it in a water stand (or our water stand for large trees from 2 to 3 m), top it up regularly and keep it away from radiators: it will stay beautiful until New Year.

How long does an artificial Christmas tree last?

A quality artificial tree, stored in its packaging in a dry place, will easily last 10 years or more.

Is an artificial tree a fire hazard?

Our artificial trees meet the NEN 71-2 fire safety standard (fire-retardant). As with any Christmas tree, keep it away from candles and heat sources.

What size should I choose?

Take your ceiling height and subtract 35 to 50 cm to leave room for the stand and the tree topper. Find all the details in our size guide.

Can I pay with eco-vouchers?

Yes, we accept eco-vouchers (éco-chèques / ecocheques) as a payment method, for both real and artificial trees.
